Follow Jesus. Make Disciples. Transform the World.

Mission of the United Methodist Church

The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

The Preamble to the Constitution of the United Methodist Church defines, “The church is a community of all true believers under the Lordship of Christ. It is redeemed and redeeming fellowship in which the Word of God is preached by divinely called, and the sacraments are duly administered according to Christ’s own appointment.”

The church gathered provides a mean through which the true believers can
  • Duly administer and receive the Sacraments;
  • Preach and hear the Word of God;
  • Worship God and maintain a relationship with God individually and in community;
  • Nurture one another;
  • Proclaim to those who have not accepted their redemption the reality of God, the possibility of a relationship with God, and path toward establishing a relationship with God;
  • Offer relief to those who groan without the hope of a God who groans with them (Romans 8:26); and
  • Journey together toward conformity to the image of God.

Scripture presents images that reflect the nature of the Church and her members. Among those images are

children of God, joint-heirs with Christ, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, disciples, followers of Christ, an assembly of saints, the bride of Christ, exiles in a foreign land, a holy temple in which God dwells, the temple of the Holy Spirit, the salt of the earth, the light of the world, and the body of Christ.

These images express the fellowship of the individual true believers of the Church with one another, of the Church with God, and of the Church to the world.

Jesus’ words in Matthew provide the church with our mission: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you” (28:19-20). Drawing from the commission issued by Jesus, the 2008 Book of Discipline observes,“The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Local churches provide the most significant arena through which disciple making occurs.” Making disciples is an event and a process. We have a redeemed and redeeming fellowship. Therefore, as we carry out our mission, we not only initiate but also develop disciples (adherents, learners, imitators, and followers) of Jesus Christ.

Disciple making involves several actions. The actions included in Jesus’ command include “going,” “baptizing,” and “teaching.” The 2008 Book of Discipline offers details of actions taken in the process of disciple making. We make disciples as we:
"proclaim the gospel, seek, welcome and gather persons into the body of Christ; lead persons to commit their lives to God through baptism by water and the spirit and profession of faith in Jesus Christ; nurture persons in Christian living through worship, the sacraments, spiritual disciplines, and other means of grace, such as Wesley’s Christian conferencing; send persons into the world to live lovingly and justly as servants of Christ by healing the sick, feeding the hungry, caring for the stranger, freeing the oppressed, being and becoming a compassionate, caring presence, and working to develop social structures that are consistent with the gospel; and continue the mission of seeking, welcoming and gathering persons into the community of the body of Christ."

As the redeemed and redeeming fellowship of all true believers faithfully engages in these actions under the Lordship of Christ, we shall “Witness to the love of God in Jesus Christ through nurturing and ministering to the needs of the community, local and global.”
